A Daxi Old Street Walk, with Time for Braised Tofu
For a future visit to Daxi, I would skip the long food checklist. First look up at the shopfronts, then leave room for braised tofu: even the thickness of a slice could make the old street more than a place to pick up souvenirs. This is a walk planned in a notebook, not one I have taken.
This piece draws on Taoyuan City’s tourism information and three licensed photographs, not a visit or tasting. The images come from different authors and dates: they let us examine compositions and the appearance of food, but do not establish today’s shops, weather or flavors. Home cooking ideas are identified as suggestions, not the photographed vendor’s recipe.
Give the shopfronts a moment
In the selected street photograph, the façade on the left dominates: a curved pediment, columns and ornamental reliefs layer together before the row of buildings recedes to the right. Below are shaded arcades, signs, a red umbrella and pedestrians, with part of a car roof at the edge. I like that untidy everyday quality; looking at old architecture need not mean erasing daily life.
Taoyuan’s official tourism guide describes the shopfronts around Heping and Zhongshan roads as combining Baroque ornament with traditional Minnan motifs. On a planned walk, I would pause in an arcade without obstructing passage, looking first at the columns and then at the pediments. I would not guess a date for every building or assume that old signs prove a business is still operating.

Let the tofu’s cut surfaces speak
The official guide lists dried tofu among Daxi Old Street’s characteristic snacks. The food photograph’s file title also identifies Daxi, but the image shows a mixed braised platter, not a plate in which every brown piece can be called tofu. Some slices have dark edges and pale centers, while other items are curved or layered. Here I focus on recognizable tofu cut surfaces rather than guess every ingredient.
The pale tray is lined with clear plastic, leafy greens gather at the center, a mound of red sauce sits at the upper right, and the braising liquid catches the light. Gloss does not tell us saltiness, nor do slices tell us whether the food was warm or cool. I would look for a seasoned outside with bean flavor and some bite within, but that is a preference for choosing food, not a review of this platter.

At home, begin with thickness and gentle heat
For a simple home version, I would choose plain firm tofu labeled as suitable for heating, follow its package directions, and gently heat it in water with a little soy sauce, tasting before adjusting. This is a home exercise, not a method shared by every Daxi producer or the photographed vendor’s secret recipe. Sugar, spices or chili can be tested separately in small amounts.
Thinner slices expose more surface to seasoning but are easier to break when handled; thicker pieces make the contrast between center and edge easier to observe. I would start with a small batch, avoid reducing the liquid so quickly that it becomes overly salty, and cut a piece with a clean knife to compare. The aim is not the darkest possible color but a thickness and seasoning that suit you.
If adding cilantro or chili sauce, season a small portion separately so the tofu itself remains a point of comparison. Mixed braised dishes may include meat or other ingredients, so doneness and allergens need separate checks. Keep raw and cooked utensils apart, refrigerate cooked food promptly and reheat thoroughly. The mixed platter is not a home ingredient list, nor evidence that the dish is vegetarian.
Leave the last stretch for the bridge
The official guide lists Daxi Bridge among the nearby attractions, making it a possible next page in a walking plan, though no fixed walking time or current access is promised here. In the source photograph, a gray gateway with one large central arch and two smaller openings fills the foreground; brick-red lower pillars meet the paving, with the bridge, suspension cables and hills behind to the right. Lines cross the upper view, another reminder that the photograph is not a perfectly cleared postcard.

If I make this trip, I would put the phone away somewhere out of the pedestrian flow and give the shopfronts and bridge a few minutes each. There is no need to call the tofu a must-eat or fill the day with achievements. A pale cut surface, the anticipation of a savory aroma, and the willingness to look a little longer would be enough.
